Le Petit Saigon at 鼓楼

Vietnamese food is one of the top in my list as healthiest food in the world. Perhaps its the simplicity of its ingredients and arrangements and the aroma that wafts into the air that gives me the vibe that I'm eating something freshly plucked from the ground, washed, the arranged in the kitchen.

My very good friend 绫子 and I had one of our last meals in Le Petit Saigon in the 鼓楼 Bell Tower area of Beijing, before she returns to her premier job in the Japanese Trade Bureau. 绫子 is the epitome of health and beauty, so we both had ourselves some of Vietnam's delicious Pho (mine with beef, hers all veggie - she is, between us, is the epitome of health and beauty.)

I appreciated how the restaurant put in old alcohol label and bottles, and filled the room with pictures of rural Vietnam. The walls were lime green but the interiors were all designed with wood, and with perfect lighting, made us feel warm all through out. Menu in French and Chinese - a good way to practice my Chinese, and yearn for my once dream of learning French.

Cafe 69, Hanoi, Vietnam

For our last Vietnamese meal, Clark, Jho and I hit Cafe 69 for a chillax vacation ender slash UBE meal. The place was a beautiful fusion of Western and Vietnamese influences - jazz music reverberates on the dark wooden walls, pho served on European ceramic bowls.

Gourmet dinner from Pinta Gold Cruiser, Halong Bay, Vietnam

An afternoon of cave explorations, adrenaline rushes and chillaxing on our beach beds as we cruised by the bay in view of the 1000 year old rock formations brought us to the next highlight of the trip - our dinner

Seriously - fried spring rolls

We were lucky enough to be on the same ship where the couple celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary. 36! So the staff brought out mocha cake and some champagne

Perhaps love =)

Key take away from Clark and Ynna:
The Secret - the stronger you want it, the more it will come to you
Yes, we all really wanted cake after dinner.

Lunch at Pinta Gold Cruiser, Halong Bay, Vietnam

We spent our Halong Bay weekend in Pinta Gold Cruiser and I must say, save for pesky insects, it was good value for money. For USD 99, they served gourmet, had tons of fruits on board, and tolerated my whims.

Note the gourmet food bit. I will just note here the essential ingredients of the dish, but as you can see, it the little things that make all the difference. =)

Fried yam

tomato and pickles

Torta of sorts

Clams

Chicken and sesame seeds

Fried fish

Squid

Orange lemon and passion fruit - "Summer drink"

Green leafy dish

Pineapple juice - blended with yoghurt

Authentic Pho! at Hanoi Cozy Hotel, Vietnam

Had this for breakfast the morning before we hit Halong Bay. The day before, we had less pleasant scrambled eggs and less fresh fruits, but I think since we had breakfast earlier we were able to catch some Pho.

Yummy! Maybe its the way they cook the beef, which almost feels like sponge cake, or the herbs that they put in the soup that warmly soothes my throat, but it's genuinely unlike any pho that I tasted outside of Vietnam.

Does this mean Pho Hoa has been faking it?? Nvm, it's the next best I suppose.

Cafe 48, Hanoi, Vietnam

For late night drinks, we searched for Funky Monkey but ended up in Cafe 48 instead. Anyway the goal was to taste the Ha Noi and Saigon beer.

Essential iced Vietnamese coffee (qualifier is important!) at VND 15,000
Yes, it is made up of 1/6 condensed milk

Bia Ha Noi at VND 20,000

Bia Saigon at VND 17,000

I rarely drink beer cause I don't like the taste. I'm Samson that way. I will not be a good judge of good and bad beer, so all I can say is - it tastes like beer!

Vietnamese Buffet at Sen, Hanoi

Finding Sen was a happy accident. We were looking some high end buffet restaurant that charges VND 250,000 when the cab driver brought us to some carnival place where a lot of Japanese tourists were parked. We all felt tired and hungry and didn't want to add to our VND 90,000 cab fare, so Ramon and I checked our the place and I impressed with the ambiance.

This buffet package cost VND 170,000. Super sulit considering it was the first time we had escargot!

Trust that I tasted everything that I feature here. I'm not a glutton, but yes, I ate a lot.

Highlights are:

SNAILS!

A member of the clam family

Second set of snails!

SNAIL CURRY

Sea shells by the sea shore of sort

Frozen manok

Rubber duckie

Plus the usual suspects:

Braised ox tail with Chinese herbs
