The closest thing I will get to the Philippine President

Not her per se, but to her food.

Meet Madam President's pastry chef

Heaven's loft in Orchard Central

We checked out desserts in the newly opened Heaven's Loft in Orchard Central. The mouth watering dessert bar was closed by 11 and we entered 30 minutes late, so or choices were narrowed down to variations of Ben and Jerry's ice cream and (left over) cakes.

Mud pie at SGD 4.9
Mango rasberry at SGD 5
Hazelnut cake at SGD 4.90

Nothing great. Cakes tasted pretty dry, probably from the whole day refrigeration. The mudpie was warm and soft at the middle which was a treat, but otherwise, I'll keep my verdict till I taste samplings of their dessert bar.

Fried spicy baby squid

I got a pretty good look of Chinatown last night while we hunted for dinner. It's fabulous at night!

Shared dinner is always best as I get to taste different viand.

Fried spicy baby squid - SGD 10/small serving - can feed two people.

Carrot cake and Tiramisu in Coffee Bean

Carrot cake is my favorite that's why I look forward to tasting it in every establishment that offers it. I had a taste of the version distributed by Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf at One Fullerton.

Carrot cake - the cream tasted good when cold, but it melted easily.
There's too much going on in the cake itself (raisins, nuts, carrot pieces etc). SGD 5.5

I'm not a fan of tiramisu and this tasted ordinary (SGD 6)

Nonetheless, it was a lovely round of desserts because it was the view that enticed us to have it there.

Jolly-V and sugar cane juice

Finally got to try out the much talked about Jolly-V in Lau Pa Sat, the Singapore version of the very famous Jollibee.

Formerly Jolly-V

Just as crispy as the original, but I still prefer Jollibee's,
probably because of how the mix their flour and marinade
(SGD 2.5 / pc)

Nasi Goreng with Iklan Bilis (Fried rice with anchovies) never fails. (SGD 4.5)

My first sugar cane juice (SGD 1.2)

Nasi Lemak

As a break from our usual TTR lunch, Jho and I had Nasi Lemak in Seah Im Hawker Center. Nasi Lemak's literal translation is coconut rice, then you have an assortment of viand to go along with it fragrant rice. The flavor of the coconut settled subtly on my taste buds

Nasi Lemak with fried chicken, egg, squid and beans for SGD 3.5

Nasi Lemak with fried chicken, iklan bilis (!!) and squid for SGD 3.2

Cheap alternatives, worth a taste. Back to TTR on Monday!

Al Forno in East Coast, Singapore

Liz, Su and I had dinner at Al Forno at East Coast last week to avail of their 1 for 1 promo for their pizza and pasta. This was also when Lizzie debuted her new braces.

Bruschetta at SGD 3.5 each - on the house!

free bread of life
Saute di Vongole at SGD 19

Farfalle al Salmone, perfect mix of cheese and tomato, at SGD 22

Half Prosciutto e Funghi (SGD 23 for whole) and Saporita (SGD 25 for whole)
The Tiramisu - SGD 9 - lived up to the hype!
The best I've tasted, and I'm not even a tiramisu fan.

I'm up for seconds! Definitely worth the long trip.

CNY team lunch

We are very different people now.

Analakshmi in Chinatown point

More important that the food they serve (vegetarian buffet with greatttt lassi), what is more striking about Analakshmi is that they implement the eat what you want, give what you feel

concept where you can, essentially, eat whatever you want and pay the amount that you think you ate. The staff of the restaurant serve purely out of good will, entertain the guest with gusto, and when you get to the cashier, they just "have full trust and faith in the goodness and fairness of our guests."

Thank you Su and Shaz for taking me here. I took Eeets here for lazy Sunday lunch.

Margarita's at East Coast Road

I took Isa food tripping during the Independence day long weekend and one of our discoveries was Margarita's. We only tried their desserts, which was around SGD 12-16 per plate.

Brownies ala mexicana con hela y salsa de chocolate
(Brownies with ice cream)

Khabrita - kahlua with ice cream

I'm not the best judge of dessert, because if its chocolate or ice cream, I automatically think its delish(!). I preferred the brownies over the kahlua ice cream, because while I felt that the Kahlua is worth a try, the bitter-sweet taste does not seem to jive in this concoction.

Mang Kiko's Lechon

We checked out Mang Kiko's Lechon in Lau Pa Sat for lunch. I don’t like the popular Lechon, but everytime we go to Mang Kiko's, they don't have it in stock. This may be their cheap marketing ploy to encourage customers to check it out and end up ordering their (yuhmeh!) roasted chicken and pork belly.

Roasted Chicken for SGD 6. It’s really better than it looks! Note: That is Mang Tomas right there!

The tender meat was flavorful and the chicken skin was crispy and had less fat. The 1/4 chicken is sulit at SGD 6 but I wouldn’t highly recommend their SGD 2.5 leche flan (dessert) because the inner core of the flan was too soft and too sweet. But I’d travel to Lau Pa Sat for more of that chicken!

Harry's

There is something eerily comforting about beer o'clock at Harry's. It's almost as if everything gets sucked into a vacuum once I enter.

We're mostly limited to the crazy hour where their house pours are at SGD 6.

Mosi Cafe in Haji Lane

Once I hung out with Su, Shaz and their rock climbing friends in Mosi Cafe in Haji Lane. Haji Lane is one of my favorite places here because it's filled with frivolous things that I collectively cannot afford. Haji is where you stay trapped for hours but you didn't even know it. Mosi stayed true to the hobo-yuppie-stay trapped for hours vibes of Haji.

I meant to show the logo. Whoops.

The menu was Moroccan. We had what looked like potato wedges, chicken salad and kebab. They had a dates milkshake! Yum!

Overall, I felt that the food was nothing out of the ordinary, but the vibes that the place created spelled c-h-i-l-l-a-x. I'd go back for the dates milkshake.

The best part is the sheesha, though I have never gotten around that. Maybe next time.

Wee Nam Kee Chicken Rice

It struck me how I always recommend my guests to try out Wee Nam Kee. It really is true that when you taste a lot of versions of chicken rice, you recognize the subtelties that help you assert which version is better or best.

The cereal prawn and chicken rice are our must haves everytime we visit.

=) !!! (SGD 24 I think)

I'll be content with even just the cereal (SGD 16)

Seetha's Sagan

Last Saturday I attended my friend Seetha's Sagan Ceremony. The top floor of Storehub became a whole new world as the women donned traditional wear that fashioned intricate designs.

The hall was elegantly designed and the food was a unique cultural experience. It turned me into a Nan worshipper.

Seetha looking more beautiful than usual.

(I work on including food styling in my repertoire.)
