I remember spending some lunches in the old Gayuma along Esteban Abada back in my Ateneo days, amused by the dish titles and giggling over the Better Than Sex cake. They closed down mid-university years but opened up again recently along Maginhawa Street. Thanks to Didang for the heads up (she tagged me on her photo of the chocolate-covered dory, and it got me excited).
Gayuma refers to a love potion, usually a concocted drink, sometimes an object that arouses sexual desire. Its use is associated with failed courtship, unrequited love or secret admiration. It is usually a mix of natural and organic materials, which perfectly sells the idea to me - because what is the feeling of love but a bunch of bodily chemical alterations? For a mystical folk item, gayuma is ironically sold in major churches like the Quiapo and Baclaran Church.
The food photos are borrowed from Didang. She has great eyes for a good frame and I am a big fan of her work.
Once you go black, you never go back - cocoa-crusted cream dory with chocolate sauce for Php 225. My most recommended!
Chinoy in seventh heaven - fried chicken obra gently simmered in a concoction of Chinese herbs with heavenly rice mix for Php 240
